Time to Think

Another peaceful morning on the deck

**Disclosure- This post is a little off the wall. I pretty much started writing whatever came to mind, so it isn’t necessarily going to flow very well. You’ve been warned.

It’s amazing what time can do for a person. Having graduated over a month ago and still on the hunt for a job, I’ve had a lot of ‘free time’ to do some other things. The majority of that free time has been spent getting ready for the baby, but I try to make time for some other plans as well.

Every week or so, I’ve made it a routine to go to Bongo Java and do my #Trust30 writing on one of my off days. Sadly, I have been falling a bit behind on them and have been writing multiple posts a day. Other than that though, I find it to be a fresh and invigorating change of venue. Sitting back enjoying the music while I feast on a Salmon Plate (best thing on the menu) and an iced Mochahontas, I also find the time to do my writing, whether it be on paper or laptop. People watching is also an enjoyable past time while I spend my hour or two there, imagining some new idea that more than likely will remain that; an idea.

The past few days, I’ve been looking at out finances, trying to figure out how to pay down debt and where to trim costs. I’ve scaled back Netflix, cancelled my Evernote Premium membership, looked at getting only the e-version of the paper (if at all) and am now looking at cutting cable altogether. For what we pay, we don’t really watch all that much TV to begin with. If I cut us down to the bare minimum or go to OTA HDTV, am I really missing out? Maybe ESPN, but other than that, all the things we watch are either on Netflix or AppleTV. If Boxee can get there game together and make a deal with Hulu, then I will definitely be purchasing one and cutting the cord.

Not being in school anymore has afforded me the opportunity to begin reading what I enjoy again. This week alone I have finished off 3 books that I began reading last semester. Without the requirement of ‘pointless’ reading, I now have all the time in the world. It’s a good feeling to be reading for enjoyment or self improvement again. At least I can take those instructional books in stride now. Gotta work on the skills in the off season.

In this world that we live in, we are constantly connected. Whether that is a good or bad thing is a mixed bag, but as of late, I’ve been less connected. Ever since I had my Palm Treo 650, I was in love with the fact that I could get email out in the wild and not have to be tied to a desktop computer. Every time you got a message, you’d get a notification, and an interruption in routine would ensue. Fast forward 5 or 6 years and we now have the iPhone. Texts, tweets, email, notifications, calls, voicemails; it’s a wonder our phones don’t go dead more often. I always had Push notifications turned on because I ‘needed’ to know what was happening, when it happened, immediately if not yesterday. So how in his uber-connected world have I disconnected? I turned off the ‘Push’. So simple. I get emails now only when ‘I’ check for them. Surprisingly, it seems to have affected my social networking as well. I’m not checkin Twitter or Facebook nearly as much as I used to. Having my iPad packed up to leave for the hospital, I have been consuming less media in general from it and moving to other outlets and devices. My Kindle, which I have barely used in a few months, is what I have been doing all that aforementioned reading on. I have been listening to TED talks during my commute and have been catching up on all the latest podcasts that I used to subscribe to. It’s not that I’m consuming less media, I’m just consuming it in another manner. Funny how that seems to have worked.

In my battle to de-clutter my life, I had been selling DVD’s and books to Amazon. After upgrading to the iPhone4, my wife and I had 2 useless phones for the most part. I, being the ultimate repurposer, wanted to keep them thinking that they wouldn’t have much value. After mulling it over for awhile, I decided to list them on eBay…..and my 1G iPod Touch, my old 3G iPod Nano, 4G iPod Photo, and the list goes on. Needless to say, everything sold but 1 item, which I’m going to relist, and that has basically added up to almost a months salary for me. Yeah commerce! It really goes to show that one man’s junk is another’s treasure. But why stop there! Next I’m going to try and sell my old camera, Griffin Powermate, etc, etc, etc.

So perhaps this down time has been good for me. I haven’t done any editing, but I have taken care of something else that’s more important; myself.

A Message for the Masses

09 Jun

Day 10 of the #Trust30 writing project- What is burning deep inside of you? If you could spread your personal message RIGHT NOW to 1 million people, what would you say?
I lived. Have you?

**UPDATED 6/10/11

Ok. That was a cop out response. It was late and the day and I hadn’t given it any thought after getting off work. So what would my message be. Really.

You hear people spouting about going to the live scene of music and “support local music” all the time. My message is…

Support you local fast food!

Let me clarify that.

When I say fast food, I’m not referring to your McDonalds down the street or Taco Bell, I’m referring to your local eateries, food stalls, etc. Homegrown businesses that make food fast, not fast food. Good local food at usually decent prices that isn’t mass produced on an assembly line. Granted, I have been an avid fast food (the bad one) for years. After a heart attack scare panic attack I had several years ago, I have only had one hash brown since then, and that was under duress. With a son on the way, I want to be around for him, so I have taken it upon myself to start walking the healthier and local path that is real fast food. It’s not always about quantity people. It’s about quality, and that’s what you are getting when you eat local. Spread the word and the wealth and eat locally!

For you that live in the Greater Nashville Area, here are a list of great places and trucks to eat at. Enjoy one on me!

The Scariest Thing in the World

08 Jun

Day 9 of the #Trust30 writing project- What topic do you fear writing about?

What is the scariest thing for me to write about? If you had asked me a year ago, I probably would have said having kids without a doubt. These days, the scariest thing I can think of would be my mortality. Leaving this world before my son arrives. That would be the scariest thing that I can think of to write about. Having said that, I’m going to the doctor tomorrow.

Revisiting the Past

More luggage than we need

Can you fit your life into one piece of luggage?

If you had to pack your entire life in to one suitcase, could you do it? That’s the question I pose to you. Every so often I like to revisit topics that I have written about. One such topic is that of the “One Suitcase.” You might wonder what it is that I am referring to. The idea is that all we ‘need’ in our life can fit into one suitcase. Everything else can be done away with or replaced (if need be). The reason I like to revisit this topic is that I am interested to see how my perspective changes; for better or worse. So let’s begin.

Definitely Packing

  • Drobo- This is where all of our media files are contained. Rather than carrying around hundreds of DVD’s, all of our movies and TV shows are contained on 4 drives. All of it can be accessed via my laptop or another computer.
  • iPad- My newest ‘toy.’ Games, books, news, periodicals, media, internet, etc. Everything in a small package. I could almost do without my laptop after acquiring this; almost.
  • Kindle- This one has been a question mark. I now own a Kindle and an iPad. Do I really need to pack it? I can access all my kindle books on the iPad, so why would I need it? After thinking it over a while, I’ve decided to keep it. My Kindle, for all intents and purposes, is a textbook. I can lug this around in a bag and not feel like the world has ended if it got broken or stolen. They are cheap enough these days that I could replace it if need be and sometimes it’s nice to have a device with a single use.
  • Laptop- One cannot survive on virtual keyboard alone. True, I could purchase a Bluetooth keyboard, but that’s not something I need. Being a videographer/editor, I can’t work my craft on an iPad. It’s just not made for that.
  • Hard drives/flash drives- These don’t really take up all that much space but they can weigh you down. If I had to leave the house and knew I wasn’t coming back, I’d pull all of them out of my MacPro. If I had enough warning of an impending disaster, then I could transfer much of my data to the cloud.
  • Clothes- You can’t go for long without a change of clothes. We really don’t need that much anyways. Certainly not a walk in closet full.
  • Nikon D90- Not only can I take great photographs, I can shoot in HD video as well. I’m not a major photographer, so I don’t have any extra lenses to go with this. Sad.
  • CPAP- I can’t go anywhere without this. Having sleep apnea means I HAVE to have this with me. If not, no one else around me is getting any sleep.
  • Knives- One has to feed themselves don’t they? I have a knife bag, and would probably only put a few kitchen necessities in it.
  • Pan- One large sauté pan should do the trick.
  • iPhone/iTouch- Mobile phone and games in the size of a deck of cards roughly.
  • Elgato’s EyeTV- All I need is a coax cable and I have TV. Don’t need to lug around a TV. Not that I watch that much TV to begin with.
  • Moleskine- Sometimes we just need to go off the grid and do some analog work. I always have one of these on me to jot down any ideas that might strike me on the fly.
  • Leatherman- Always have to be prepared for something. Obviously we are talking about checked luggage here.
  • Photos- The majority of my photos are digital so this originally wasn’t a major concern to me. Then my wife read the article and scolded me for not thinking of our wedding photos. Bad husband.

Maybe if there is room

  • Canon HV20- This HD camcorder is small enough to fit in a bag, but do I really need it with the D90?
  • AppleTV or Mac Mini- If I have my laptop with me, do I really need either of these to stream my content? If there is room then, ehhh. I’m not completely sold on this one.
  • Edirol R09- I have a perfectly good recorder on my phone and iPad. If I really need high quality recording value, then I guess I’m up the creek.
  • Airport Express- I have several of these spread out around the house. Could always use at least one wherever I end up.

Not Even Going to Consider It

  • Gaming Consoles- As much as I love video games, they just aren’t that big a part of my life. I’m sure I just lost some credibility with that statement. I can do without my Wii and PS2, even my Nintendo DS. It’s rare that I find a game that I become incredibly immersed in any more, and if I’m thinking of packing the essentials then this is definitely not one of them. Sorry gamers.
  • Mac Pro- This thing is a beast. This is my workhorse, but he’s just way too big. Sorry buddy but I’m just going to rip your hard drives out and run.
  • Electronics- TV, DVD, Blu-Ray, Surround Sound, extra monitors, etc. Frivolous.
  • Canon XLH1- This videocamera is way too big to lug around with me. If I could take one more bag, then this would be it. (It has it’s own backpack) Otherwise there is no sense in trying to pack it.
  • Miscellaneous computer peripherals- Way too many to list.

So after looking back at the previous post, I think I have given this a little more thought than I did the first time. I was a little vague the first time around while this time I feel I’ve given it some more thought. Maybe priorities do change. I’d like to think in the past few months that I have become less materialistic. With a baby arriving in several months, it’s not just about myself anymore. Besides that, we have to make room. Thank you internet for making it easy to sell things we don’t ‘need’ anymore and for helping me to see what’s important to me.

The Path Less Taken

The Path Less Taken

There was a time when I would go to Radnor Lake and wander about the trails for hours taking in everything I could around me. The leaves. The wind. The mosquitos; maybe not those. The point being that I was fully aware of my surroundings. The past couple years or so, I’ve seen this lovely place as only a spot to get some exercise. Go for the run, burn off some calories, hike around the hill as fast as I could. I had lost sight of the bigger picture, and that saddens me. Technology is a way of life for me. I am constantly using it, collecting data, streaming, blogging, capturing, editing; the list could go on forever. It wasn’t till the other day that I decided to go for a workout there, but stop and try to be aware of my surroundings as I used to be. Try and find a balance if you will.

When I generally go the Radnor Lake, I have to have my ID, iPhone, iPod, HR monitor, and watch/remote. Before I go any further let me clarify. I can’t leave my iPhone in the car. Cars have been broken into in the past, and when your whole life is on a silly device, you don’t chance it getting stolen. I have a 2nd generation Nano that I use with the Nike+ sensor to track my workouts. Why don’t I just use my phone you ask? Because it is not compatible with it. I own the 3G, not the 3GS. Then there are my two wrist adornments. HR monitor and remote for the iPod. I feel compelled to collect as much data as I can when I workout, that I can’t bring myself to leave this stuff at home. Now granted, this is when I go their to exercise. Sometimes I go there just to relax and get inspiration. That’s when I am less ‘connected’.

I’ll enter the forest with my phone and a Moleskine notebook. If I become inspired, I write something down in it. If I need a picture of something such as the lone, solitary red flower that I found growing, I can snap a pic of it.

Red wildflower

The Lone Red Flower

The day I shot these was a little different from others. I felt as those things were getting a bit overwhelming and that my body was trying to tell me something. I think it was trying to tell me to stop and relax. So I decided to go and clear my head at the only place I knew that could do the job, Radnor Lake. It had been such a long time since I had walked the trails, that I thought I should revisit them first. Keep in mind that I am wired on this trek, but not unaware of things going on around me. The music in my ears was turned down rather low so I could hear if a bear was behind me, yeah right. As I trekked up the hill, I noticed a few violet colored flowers on my right. They slowly began to increase in numbers until I came upon the side of the hill. A waterfall of violets took up the whole side of the hill. It was amazing. A photo from my phone would not have done it justice, so I decided to make a mental image that I could revisit at a later time.

I would later notice on my journey that there were would be ‘regions’ along the trail of various plant life. Just as there was the violet region, there would be a large, leafy fern region. A white flower blanket in another region. Variety doesn’t even seem to be the right word to use. Coming to the end of the trails, I started to feel a little sad that I was back to ‘reality’. The open road where I would begin my run seemed to come to soon. If I had had all the time in the world, I might have run to the beginning and started over again, but alas time was against me. Will I go back? Of course I will, and next time there WILL be a second go ’round.
