Connections

24 Jun

Day 23 of the #Trust30 writing project- Who is one person that you’ve been dying to connect with, but just haven’t had the courage to reach out to? First, reflect on why you want to get in touch with them. Then, reach out and set up a meeting.

I have been mulling this topic over for a few days now, and am still not convinced about who I want to meet. How indecisive of me. Before this goes on any later, I figure I should pick someone; and that someone is Anthony Bourdain.

I remember the first time I saw him on TV was for previews of his A Cook’s Tour show on Food Network. He seemed like such a badass, and his first episode was in Japan. What more could I want?! He smoked, he swore, he ate great food from around the world; and made me want to be a chef. Granted that vision as a profession was short lived, but he put that idea in my head about how great traveling is. I went out and bought his first book, Kitchen Confidential and just tore it up. I NEVER do that with books! I bought his next book which was the inspiration for the TV show and tore that one up as well. So what is it about him that is so appealing?

I love the style in which he writes; it’s very gratifying to me. He says what he is thinking and doesn’t try to sugar coat it. I have been an avid reader of his ever since then. I would love to have a job like his. Travel around the world, try new foods and write about them. The second time I went to Japan, I made sure to keep a travel log. When I got back and read it to my father, the first thing he said was, “Did you do anything else besides eat?” I was so engrossed with the food and culture there that I didn’t really think of anything else. It was all I could do to get my thoughts on paper. But I digress.

So why haven’t I reached out to him. Time. Location. Stardom. Lowly Peon. Who knows. Maybe it never really dawned on me to try and connect with him. I follow him on Twitter, what else should I do? Maybe write a letter? No one ‘writes’ anymore. It’s all emails and tweets these days. Maybe that would be a start. So my next job would be to compose a letter. Here’s to hoping I follow through and get a reply.

I Know, Do You?

20 Jun

Day 21 of the #Trust30 writing project- For today, trying asking yourself often, especially before you make a choice, “What do I know about this?”

What do I know about anything? Who am I to say that I am a authority on anything. A lot of choices are made impromptu these days, it’s almost like impulse shopping. What do we know about a product before we pull the trigger in most cases? We can read customer reviews, blogs, self-proclaimed authorities, but what really matters is what we think about a situation. Take today for example.

After much thought, and many sleepless nights, I’m cashing in my IRA. Did I want to? No. Did I have a choice? Maybe, but what I do know is that not having a steady line of income and a baby on the way means that I need to be able to provide at least one more mortgage payment than I would be able to otherwise. Do I regret my decision? No. Should I have looked at other options before selling? Already had, and this was the safest bet for my family’s immediate future.

Let’s look at another example. Jerky. Did I know it was going to rain today? Not really. Did I go ahead and put the smoker out on the porch after the first storm. Yes. Was I worried about another possible storm coming through? Yes. What did I do to solve the problem? I brought the smoker under the covered deck. Was it the right decision? Yes, there is a larger line of storms coming through that would have doused the smoker and wasted all the charcoal and meat. Did I have to go through with it today and make the jerky? Sadly, yes. It had been marinating for 3 days already and it is a Father’s day gift, so I had to go about and get it taken care of

A Message for the Masses

09 Jun

Day 10 of the #Trust30 writing project- What is burning deep inside of you? If you could spread your personal message RIGHT NOW to 1 million people, what would you say?
I lived. Have you?

**UPDATED 6/10/11

Ok. That was a cop out response. It was late and the day and I hadn’t given it any thought after getting off work. So what would my message be. Really.

You hear people spouting about going to the live scene of music and “support local music” all the time. My message is…

Support you local fast food!

Let me clarify that.

When I say fast food, I’m not referring to your McDonalds down the street or Taco Bell, I’m referring to your local eateries, food stalls, etc. Homegrown businesses that make food fast, not fast food. Good local food at usually decent prices that isn’t mass produced on an assembly line. Granted, I have been an avid fast food (the bad one) for years. After a heart attack scare panic attack I had several years ago, I have only had one hash brown since then, and that was under duress. With a son on the way, I want to be around for him, so I have taken it upon myself to start walking the healthier and local path that is real fast food. It’s not always about quantity people. It’s about quality, and that’s what you are getting when you eat local. Spread the word and the wealth and eat locally!

For you that live in the Greater Nashville Area, here are a list of great places and trucks to eat at. Enjoy one on me!
